The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has elected Dr. Salma Rasheed, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN Office in Geneva, as Vice President of the Council for the remainder of 2025.
Dr. Rasheed was nominated by consensus of the Asia-Pacific Group to represent the region in the Council’s leadership. She joins representatives from Chile, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Romania as one of four Vice Presidents currently serving on the Council.
This marks another milestone in the Maldives’ active engagement with the UNHRC. The country has previously served on the Council during the periods 2011–2013 and 2014–2016, and is currently serving its third term from 2023 to 2025. The Maldives also held the Vice Presidency of the Council in both 2013 and 2023.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu hailed the appointment as a proud moment for the nation, stating in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the Maldives has a proven track record of advocating for human rights.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the appointment reaffirms the Maldives' ability to contribute meaningfully to the leadership and effective functioning of the Council.
"Throughout its membership, the Maldives has consistently upheld the universality of human rights and promoted dialogue, cooperation, and consensus-building as core principles of the multilateral system," the statement added.
