President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the construction of 100 new housing units in Nolhivaranfaru will be handed over to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) early next month.
During a community meeting on the island, the President stated that the upcoming housing units are intended for residents who own land but have been unable to build homes due to financial or logistical constraints.
“These will be three-bedroom houses constructed on each individual’s own land. The island council should now begin identifying eligible residents. The project will be carried out in coordination with the council and the Ministry,” President Muizzu said.
He highlighted the initiative as a “very important project,” noting it will provide much-needed relief to families struggling to develop their private plots.
The announcement follows the official handover of 100 previously completed housing units to the Nolhivaranfaru Island Council. President Muizzu noted that approximately 250 more units are still required to meet local housing demand, which prompted the launch of this new phase.
In addition to the housing initiatives, the President revealed plans for significant sports infrastructure development on the island, including a FIFA-standard football stadium and a multi-purpose sports complex. The stadium project has been awarded to the Road Development Corporation (RDC), while Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will oversee the construction of the sports complex.
President Muizzu described the developments as a major step forward for the island’s growth and well-being.
